This is a summary of stuff from my paper diary of July 1965, mainly to help me work my way
around the photos I took at the time.
I drove down to Singapore with our driver, Rahmat, apparently to pick up my father, who
was coming in from Kuching, but also to buy my first SLR camera. I have a full day's
entry of paper diary for each day of this month, but I haven't got round to typing it in.
Spent all day looking at cameras and waiting for my father to arrive. He did
arrive—finally—after we had given up, and stayed the night in a different
hotel.
During the day I bought at least my first SLR, a Pentax SV. I was surprisingly unclear
about exactly what I bought, but I believe that I bought at least the following by
mid-September:
-
The Pentax SV.
-
A light meter for the camera, which fitted in the flash shoe (and thus had to be removed
for using on-camera flash), and which linked to the shutter speed dial. It displayed
aperture values which I then had to transfer manually to the lens. The display was on
top, so it was nothing like “through the lens” metering.
-
A 28 mm f/3.5 Super Takumar wide angle lens.
-
A 135 mm f/3.5 Super Takumar telephoto lens.
